Desktop Themes

The Baseball themeThis is a new feature to the standard Operating System release, but has been included in the Windows 95 Plus! pack for years. Quite simply it allows the full customisation of the interface and UI using new icons for the system (My Computer, Network Neighbourhood, etc), new wallpapers for the background, new mouse pointers and new sounds for the Startup and Shutdown and for other system events. All the tick boxes for the themes settingsThe reason it is called Desktop Themes is because, while you can choose individual elements, you can simply change the entire look by selecting a new scheme. The Plus! pack and Windows 98 come with a selection of schemes that you can choose from and by simply choosing one from the drop down menu, all the system defaults mentioned above will be changed to the ones in the scheme in one click. If you choose a theme and only want to use individual elements of it, like the wallpaper and screen saver, then you need to choose these and none of the others from the tick box selection down the right hand side. If you want to preview a screen saver or the pointers and icons, there are buttons to do this at the top right. The Pointers button will open a separate dialog that allows you to preview each part, with a preview pane, where necessary, at the bottom of the dialog. Some of the options that are supplied as themes are also available for adjustment in the Display Control Panel, in the Background, Screen Saver, Appearance and Effects (formerly Plus! tab) and in the Mouse Control Panel. Complete with funky new iconsA bit of self-publicityThe schemes are a way of customising your desktop so that it appears individual and it has encouraged many people to release their own schemes into the Public Domain. If there is a topic or show you are interested in, from the X-Files to the Simpsons, you can bet that there will be a scheme for you. Companies are cashing in too. With the copyright breaches created by taking samples from shows a legal issue, companies prefer to launch their official themes which they may charge for or release as a promotional item that will encourage people to buy their merchandise. Yes, hear Monty Python say "Knig-hts", Homer say "Doh!" or, well, pretty much anything. If you customise your system completely adding in your own disparate elements, you can gather them together as a theme by choosing to save the Current Windows Settings shown in the drop down menu at the top as a file - simply click on the Save As button.
